School 18
Last Day of School
According to Baltimore’s Public School Directory - from its opening in the mid 1930s to the 1939 school year, it was known as No. 18 School. Than in 1940, it was listed as Druid Park School. By the 1945-46 school year it became the Franklin D Roosevelt, School No. 18. President Roosevelt died April 12, 1945, in office. It appears this was the key to naming the school in honor of the president.
A decade later it would be the site of another major change - integrated schools. The pic from 1955-56 was provided to me years ago from former student Dara Fromm. The pic from 1960, was purchased from the Baltimore Sun. Ten years later Black students would make up the majority of its student population and they, like the students before them, produced life long memories of friendships and dedicated teachers.
School 18's final class was 1980. Today, it is the Business Center at Park Circle and the former gymnasium is now housed by the Soul Harvest Church and Ministries.
